To my younger sister,
Deny it all you want, but you are my mini-me. You are my little twin and I cannot wait for the day that we finally reach friend status.
Being that we are separated by a few years in age, we have always been at different stages in our lives and we haven’t really been on the same page. But things are starting to change and it’s changing for the better.
We’re starting to reach that lovely period when siblings become each others best friends and I am so excited to finally be there. I’ve been waiting on you to catch up to me for the past few years *cue eye roll*.
Our communication up until this point has been kept to a minimum and only family related. I know that at times I wasn’t the easiest big sister to deal with and not always the best at connecting with you, but there are a few things that I hope you know will always be true.
That concert you want to go to? We’ll push our way to the front row. That road trip to a new city? I’ll bring the music and the snacks. You get arrested? I’ll bail you out and make fun of you for the rest of your life. The best thing about having a sister is that you have a built-in friend who is down for those unforgettable adventures. The only way we’ll get through future family functions will be together.
Know that I will always support you.
As your big sister, I am your biggest cheerleader and your harshest critic all rolled into one. I will support you to the ends of the earth but I will also call you out when I know that you can do better, be better. I know that you have the potential to be great, I see all of the amazing qualities that you possess, and I have watched you grow from the minute you were born. Watching you change into the person you are continues to amaze me because while I still see you as just my baby sister, I can see how strong and independent you are.
Because you are my sister, I want to protect you from the bad in the world.
If I could take away your hurt and your pain, if I could protect you from making the same mistakes that I have made, I would do it in a heartbeat. It may seem as if I’m constantly on your case or bugging you about the little things, but one of the perks of having a big sister is that I get to make the mistakes for you. But I also hope you know that no matter what situation you find yourself in, you can always come to me to talk about it.
Lastly, I want to be someone that you are proud of.
My goal in life is to be a good role model to you. My goal is the be the kind of person, the kind of woman, that you look up to, someone who inspires you to reach for greatness. I am a human and it’s inevitable that I may make a few mistakes in life, but as long as I am still the kind of person that you are proud to call your big sister.
Love you always loser,
Your big sister
